A ball valve is a quarter-turn valve in which flow is controlled by a spherical “ball” with a bore (hole) through it. When the ball is rotated 90° (a quarter turn), the bore aligns (open) or is perpendicular (closed) to the flow path—thus allowing or blocking flow.
Because of the shape, ball valves provide tight shutoff (low leakage) and can be quickly operated (open or close with one 90° turn)
